Prosthetics and footwear department

 

Leprosy is a complex disease. The problems of deformity and disability most frequently associated with nerve impairment in leprosy are more complex and the human concepts towards these problems are made even more complex. There are many areas in leprosy we need to cover, many problems we need to overcome and many battles we need to fight.  Any feet with impaired nerve are prone to injury. Any injury could lead to further damage with the ever increasing risk of developing disability making it more vulnerable to further deterioration In order to prevent and protect this downward spiral of deterioration, the role of prosthetics and footwear department is vital.

 

Department objectives:

 

  • Primary prevention:  Provide protective footwear to those with insensitive feet to protect their feet to prevent first ulcer.

  • Secondary prevention: Provide special footwear and orthosis to those with some degree of deformity to stop further foot damage.

  • Rehabilitation:

  • Provide orthopedic devices and prosthetic limbs to those with severe deformity and amputation to carry out daily activity and help them live a normal life with dignity.

  • Training: Train man power to facilitate wide spread footwear services to other leprosy centers in the country.

  • Teaching: Teach different level of health workers about the importance of foot wear and its positive impact to prevent foot disability.

 

Our overall aim is to prevent increasing deformity and disability.
